
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Dry (and Safe) in Wet Zones
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or a steam room is basically a fight against moisture. Water and electricity don’t get along. If your seals give out, you’re looking at a ground fault or a short circuit—which is the last thing you want when you’re stepping out of a shower. To make sure everything stays safe, we lean heavily on the IP65 standard and some smart physical isolation.
The Battle Against Leaks
An IP65 rating is great, but a label on a box isn’t a guarantee. It just means the thing is dust-tight and can handle water jets. In the real world, we don’t trust a single gasket to do all the heavy lifting. We use a multi-point sealing strategy instead. The spot where the power cable enters the housing is almost always where things go wrong. That’s why we use compression glands and silicone seals to lock out vapor. If moisture sneaks in, it hits the terminals, starts “tracking,” and eventually leads to an arc-over. Not a good day for anyone.
Blocking the Current
The materials we use for the lamp supports have to be top-notch. Quartz glass is the go-to for the tube, but the electrodes—where the wire hits the filament—are the real danger zones. We isolate those points with ceramic insulators. Why ceramic? Because it doesn’t soak up moisture like a sponge. It keeps the current exactly where it belongs: in the circuit. Before you even think about flipping the switch, grab a megohmmeter. You want to see values over 100MΩ at 500V DC. If you see that, you know the chassis is dead and it’s safe to power up.
The Real-World Trade-offs
Here’s the thing: waterproofing makes everything bulkier. An IP65 housing takes up more space and can trap heat around your wiring. This is where a lot of people mess up. They use cheap PVC wire. Under that trapped heat, PVC gets brittle and cracks, which ruins your seal.Don’t do that. Stick with silicone-insulated leads. They handle the heat without breaking a sweat. Just wire it up tight, and make it a habit to check your gaskets every six months. A quick look now saves a huge headache later.
