
Picking the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom (Without Wasting Power)
When you’re picking out infrared lamps for a bathroom, the first thing everyone talks about is the IPX5 rating. It’s the basic safety stuff—making sure the thing doesn’t short out when it gets splashed. But once you’ve got the safety part sorted, the real trick is getting the wattage right. If you get it wrong, you’re either shivering in a cold room or paying for electricity you aren’t even using.
The size of the room matters
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t actually heat the air. It heats you and the things around you. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room, a 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. Putting a massive 1200W unit in a space that small is just overkill. Not only is it a waste of money, but it can actually make the fixture itself get way too hot. On the other hand, if you’ve got a big master bath, you’ll need to jump up to 1000W or 1500W. Or—and this is my favorite way to do it—just install a few smaller lamps in different spots. It stops those annoying cold patches from popping up.
Don’t fry your wiring
Because these units are waterproof, they’re sealed tight. That means air doesn’t move around the heating element very well. We use quartz glass and reflectors to push the heat down toward the floor, but there’s a limit. If you cram too much wattage into a small, sealed box, the heat just sits there. Over time, that “heat soak” can actually wear down the internal wiring. You want a balance between how much heat comes out and how well the enclosure can breathe.
How to actually save money
Don’t just buy the most powerful lamp on the shelf. Look up. If you have high ceilings, a lot of that heat disappears before it ever reaches you. In those cases, go for higher wattage but look for a narrower beam. It concentrates the energy so it actually hits the target. Usually, the best move is to use a few low-wattage sources instead of one giant one. It feels more natural. You won’t have that weird experience where your shoulders are scorching but your toes are freezing. Just double-check that your circuit can handle the extra load before you start adding more lamps.
