
Getting Your Infrared Peaks Just Right for Glass Additives
Most standard medium wave quartz heaters just throw a broad wave of heat at everything. For a basic drying job? Totally fine. But when you’re working with specific glass additives, that “one size fits all” approach is basically just wasting electricity. You want the heat to actually hit the material, not just float around it. We call this spectral tuning, but really, it’s just about making sure the heater and the material are on the same wavelength. Hitting the sweet spot Here’s the thing: different chemicals in glass are picky. They only absorb energy at very specific wavelengths. If your heater is pumping out energy at 2.5 microns, but your additive is only listening at 3.2 microns, that heat is just going to bounce right off the surface. To fix that, we mess with the filament material and the gas inside the quartz tube. We shift the emission curve so the energy actually sinks into the glass instead of just warming up the air in the room. The catch with custom tubes Now, you can’t just swap these in and forget about it. Changing the spectrum usually means we’ve changed the alloy in the filament or added a special coating inside. That changes how the tube handles electricity. A custom tube might need a different voltage to hit the temperature required for that specific wavelength. If you just plug it into a standard power supply and crank it up, you’ll probably burn the filament out in a few weeks.Double-check your power specs before you flip the switch. Bringing it onto the shop floor We usually build these for the folks in research labs or high-end production lines. The great part is that they’re drop-in replacements—they fit right into the space you already have. But the physics are different now. Because the energy is focused into a narrow band, the heat hits the surface a lot harder. It’s intense. Keep a very close eye on your substrate temperature. If your cooling cycle is off by even a little bit, you risk thermal shock and cracked glass.
