
Getting the Heat Right in Your Bathroom
When you’re picking out an infrared lamp, it’s tempting to just go for the beefiest wattage you can find. But here’s the thing: more isn’t always better. It’s really just about matching the heat to the size of your room. If you put a massive 1200W lamp in a tiny powder room, you’re basically wasting electricity and risking a meltdown of the fixture. On the flip side, a tiny 400W lamp in a huge master bath is pretty much useless. The heat just vanishes into the air before it even reaches you. Finding your sweet spot Think of it like this. Infrared doesn’t warm up the air like a space heater does; it beams heat directly onto you. Because of that, the “footprint” of your room matters most. If you’ve got asmall bathroom (under 4m²), a single 400W to 600W short-wave lamp usually does the trick. It keeps the shower area cozy without blowing a fuse. Formedium-sized spaces (4m² to 8m²), you’ll probably want a dual-lamp setup or one strong 800W unit. This keeps the heat from dropping off as you move toward the center of the room. And for thosebig master baths (over 8m²)? Go with a three-lamp array, something in the 1200W to 1800W range. It spreads the warmth around so you don’t end up with those annoying cold spots. The trade-offs Higher wattage means you feel the heat almost instantly. A 1000W halogen tube is fast. Really fast. But that speed comes with a cost: a huge pull on your electrical system. Just make sure your wiring and breakers can actually handle the load, or you’ll be spending your morning resetting the power box. You’ll notice most of these use quartz glass. That’s because it can handle the shock of going from cold to scorching hot in a split second. We also stick with R7s connectors. Why? Because when a filament eventually pops, you can swap the bulb out in seconds without needing a toolbox. Keeping it efficient The best part about short-wave infrared is that there’s no “warm-up” period. You don’t need to turn the heater on twenty minutes before you jump in the shower. Just flip the switch, feel the warmth immediately, and kill the power the second you walk out. If you want to make it even easier, toss in a motion sensor or a timer. It saves money and means you never have to worry if you left the light on.
